The BMW E36 M3 was the first M3 to feature a straight-six engine. The Euro-spec model was powered by the S50 engine, while the one that debuted in the North American market came with a lower-performance iteration called the S50B30US. It was replaced by the S52 engine, based on the standard BMW M52 engine, in 1996. The engine, transmission and M xDrive join forces to produce stunning acceleration times. The new BMW M3 CS takes just 3.4 seconds to power from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) and 11.1 seconds to reach 200 km/h (124 mph) from rest. The midrange surge from 80 to 120 km/h (50 – 75 mph) is over in 2.6 seconds (in 4th gear) or 3.3 seconds (in 5th gear). The US-spec BMW E36 M3 also got a less desirable engine than the one available in the rest of the world. The M3 sold domestically came with the S50B30US which produced 240 hp and 225 lb-ft. For reference, the engine in other markets made 286hp and 236 lb-ft. The US M3 also missed out on floating brake rotors, an oil temperature gauge, and more.Such repairs are pretty expensive, having in mind that you can find the 2007′ 335i for as low as $8000. On top of that, there were a lot of engine cooling problems and passenger-side airbag tensioner issues. On top of that, front driveshaft bolts were known to become loose after some time, so it’s best to avoid the 2007 and 2008 model years.
